Sailing area in the Ionian sea
The Ionian sea, on the western side of the Greek mainland, is with it's predictable weather considered to be the best cruising area in the whole of Greece, a sailing paradise. It offers conditions for professional's, but also relaxed sailing for family’s and the less experienced.
From May to August the winds blow from the N, WNW, or light E, SE. In September, October and April there are S winds. They are blowing mainly between 14.00 – 19.00 in the afternoon. During the night it is completely calm. Most of the harbors, on the mainland and on the islands, are well sheltered, small, basic and free of charge, with traditional tavernas, cafe’s, and grocery shops in the picturesque village's. If you prefer a quiet hideaway, it is easy to find a small and well sheltered bay. They are mostly accessible only by boat and are a perfect stop for swimming, snorkeling and anchoring over night.
The Ionian islands, comprise seven main islands, CORFU, PAXOS, ANTIPAXOS, LEFKAS, ITHAKA, KEFALLONIA and ZAKYNTHOS.
They have a mixture of different civilizations and cultures, covered with green olive groves, bay's with crystal clear blue waters and the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean sea.
Corfu is ideal for starting a sailing trip in the Ionian sea. From our charter base in Corfu, Gouvia marina, you can explore the three small islands north west of Corfu. MATHRAKI, OTHONI and ERRIKOUSA. They offer some of the most beautiful scenery. This is a nice one week sailing trip for the perhaps more experienced sailors, because the Northern Ionian sea offers more challenging conditions.
Following Corfu's northeast, rugged, coastline and it's stunning beauty, with bay's and village's like AGNI, KOULOURA, ST. STEFANOS and AVLAKI, you can drop anchor for a swim, a meal at one of the local tavernas or for an overnight.
At the southern part of Corfu, the fishing harbor, PETRITI is a very nice stop.
Continuing south of Corfu you can explore the picturesque islands PAXOS and ANTIPAXOS. Sailing further south to the island LEFKAS, close to the interesting village's PREVEZA and VONITSA on the mainland, you have a great chance to experience sea life.
On the west coast of the Greek mainland you can also admire the beautiful archipelago by SIVOTA, visit the genuine atmosphere in PLATARIA or enjoy fresh shrimps and a fantastic sunset in SAGIADA. For a two or three week sailing trip is the islands in south Ionian sea, ITHAKA, KEFALLONIA and ZAKYNTHOS a challenging choice.
